“설교자들 위한 책들”

- 비크너와 부르그만 -

 

최근에 한글로 번역 출판된 책들 가운데, 설교 행위의 중대성을 깨우쳐주는 두 권의 책이 있습니다. 하나는 얼마 전 출판된 월터 부르그만의《마침내 시인이 온다》(성서유니온)이고 다른 하나는 갓 출판된 프레드릭 비크너의《진리를 말하다》(비아토르)입니다. 진지한 설교자들이 되려는 젊은 신학생들에게 일독을 강력하게 권하는 책입니다. 두 번째 책에 대해서는 다음 기회에 말하기로 하고, 오늘은 이 책들에 관한 뒷이야기 정도로 그치려 합니다.

 

두 사람의 공통점:

 

(1) 비크너(1926년생)와 부르그만(1933년생)은 미국 뉴욕 유니언 신학교 출신 동문이다. 그들이 공부할 때 그 신학교에서 가르쳤던 저명한 신학자들로는 폴 틸리히, 라인홀드 니버, 제임스 뮬렌버그 등이 있었다.

 

(2) 비크너와 부르그만은 유니온 신학교의 저명한 구약학자이며 수사비평의 선구자인 제임스 뮬렌버그(1896년생)의 제자들이다. 뮬렌버그가 유니온 신학교에서 가르치던 기간(1945-63년)이던 1954년에 비크너는 신학교에 입학해서 공부했고, 부르그만은 1961년에 구약학으로 박사학위를 했다.

 

(3) 비크너에게는 작가, 소설가, 시인, 에세이스트, 설교자 등 다양한 호칭이 붙어 다니는데 미국의 설교자들에게 많은 영향력을 끼치는 작가이다. 내 개인적으로는 35년 전 미국에서 신학 공부할 때부터 그를 소개받아 탐독하였는데, 아마 나의 설교 이해에 가장 큰 영향을 미친 작가들 중에 하나이기도 하다. 한편 부르그만은 우리 시대 가장 저명한 미국의 구약학자 중 한명이며 활달한 구약학 저술가로 유명하다. 그의 자극적인 구약학 글쓰기에 매료된 덕분에 나는 그의 대표적 저서《구약신학》을 번역하기에 이르렀다.

 

(4) 미국 예일 대학교 신학부에는 유서 깊은 설교학 강좌가 있다. 이름 하여 “비처 설교학 강좌”(Beecher Lectures on Preaching)다. 1872년부터 시작한 이 강좌는 당대에 저명한 설교자나 설교학자들을 초청하였다. 비크너는 1976년에 브루그만은 1988년에 이 강좌에 초대받아 강연하는 영예를 얻었다.

 

(5) 브르그만의 “비처 설교학 강좌” 강연은 《마침내 시인이 온다》로 번역 출판되었고, 비크너의 “비처 설교학 강좌” 강연은 《진리를 말하다》로 번역 출판되었다.

 

(6) “비처 설교학 강좌”에서 강연한 설교자나 설교학자로서 우리나라에도 좀 알려진 사람으로는 Ellen Davis, Richard Lischer, Thomas G. Long, Peter Gomes, Barbara Brown Taylor, Eugene Lowery, David G. Buttrick, Phyllis Trible, John R. Claypool, Fred B. Craddock, George A. Buttrick 등이 있다.

 

(7) 한국 기독교 출판사들 가운데 “설교”에 관심이 있는 출판사들은 예일 대학교 “비처 설교학 강좌”중에 출판된 책들을 번역 출판 기획을 세워도 좋으리라 생각된다. 아래를 참조하세요.
